武官名。汉末南北朝以都督统州之军事，并总揽或与刺史治州之政事。北周始改此称。隋代至唐代初在各州设总管，边镇和大州设大总管，均系地方军政长官，后又恢复都督称，但统兵出征之将帅仍为总管。北宋时总管仍系地方军政长官，分别由节度使、知府、知州兼任。辽金元时总管兼管军民。清代时在东三省、新疆及围场设总管，为率军驻防之长官。
