The US state of Alabama has carried out the first known execution of a death row inmate by suffocation with nitrogen gas.

In a statement, Alabama's governor Kay Ivey said the execution was lawfully carried out using nitrogen hypoxia, a process which involved strapping an airtight mask to Kenneth Smith's face and forcing him to breathe pure nitrogen, thereby starving the body of oxygen.
