      Chinacurrentlyhasabout 6,600 kilometersofoperationalhigh-speedrail, thelongestintheworld.

      Attheendoflastyear, Chinaunveiledtheworld'sfastestlong-distancepassengertrainservicelinkingGuangzhouandWuhan, adistancecoveringalmosthalfwayacrossthecountry, slashingthetraveltimefromtentothreehours. TherailbetweencentralChina'sXi'anandZhengzhoualsobeganoperationearlierthisyear, cuttingtraveltimeby 4 hours.

      ViceRailwaysMinisterWangZhiguosaystheoperationofthenetworkhasprovedtobeworkingsmoothly.

      "Thequalityofalltheequipmentisreliable. Thesafetyoftransportationhasalsobeenensured, withgoodsafetyrecords. What'smore, thenetworkiswelcomedbypassengers, withhighmarketdemands."

      WangZhiguosaysthatoverthenextthreeyears, Chinawillexpanditsrailwaynetworkby 20,000 kilometers, including 13,000 kilometersoftrackdesignedforhigh-speedtrainscapableoftravelingupto 350 kilometersperhour.

      TheofficialnotesthegovernmentwillputanemphasisonconstructioninwesternChinatohelpthevastunderdevelopedregionbecomelessremote.

      "ThemainroutesofthenetworkwilldirectlylinkwesternChinatothecoastalareas. Wearealsoconsideringbuildingregionalandinter-regionalrailwaystocomplementthemainroutes, suchasrailwayslinkingGuiyangandGuangzhou, aswellasNanningandGuangzhou."

      Thefastdevelopmentofthehighspeedrailwaynetworkhasraisedsomeconcernsoverpotentialdebtcrisisforfundingthemassiveprojects.
