      work的用法

      1.用作动词, 除表示“工作”外, 以下用法需注意：

      ①表示“(想法、计划等)行得通、奏效等”：

      The plan worked well. 这个计划很起作用。

      I think your suggestion will work. 我想你的建议会奏效的。

      The drug will not work. 这药不起作用。

      Will these new methods work? 这些新方法会奏效吗?

      ②表示“开动(机器等)”, 是及物动词：

      Do you know how to work this machine? 你会操纵这台机器吗?

      This machine is worked by hand (by electricity). 这台机器是手工操作的(用电带动的)。

      2.用作名词, 注意以下用法：

      ①表示“工作”, 是不可数名词：

      I go to work at eight. 我8点去上班。

      I have some work for you to do. 我有些事要你做。

      I’m looking for work. 我正在找工作。

      ②表示“工厂”, 总是用复数形式, 但通常作单数看待 (可与不定冠词连用);若用作主语, 谓语用单数或复数均可以：

      He has a job at a steel works. 他在一家钢厂工作。

      The glass works is [are]near the station. 玻璃工厂在车站附近。

      但是若意义上明显为复数，则谓语要用复数。比较：

      a)A large steelworks was built here in the thirties. 三十年代这里建了一座大钢铁工厂。

      b)A number of steelworks were built here in the thirties. 三十年代这里建了一些钢铁工厂。

      ③表示“作品”，要分两种情况：

      a)指人们用手工制作的东西(What is produced by work, esp of the hands)，如：工艺品；针钱活；刺绣品等。此时是不可数名词：

      The villagers sell their work to tourists. 村民们把他们的工艺品卖给游人。

      What a wonderful piece of work. It must have taken months to make. 多么精制的一件工艺品啊! 一定花了好几个月才制成。

      b)指文学家、艺术家、音乐家等的“作品”、“著作”等，此时为可数名词：

      He’s published several works of great scientific importance. 他出版了好几本重要的科学著作。

      He recognized the painting as an early work by Degas. 他认出了这幅画是德加的早期作品。

      表示某个作家或艺术家的“全部作品”, 通常用复数形式：

      the works of Beethoven 贝多芬的全部作品

      the collected (complete)works of Shakespeare 莎士比亚选集(全集)

      有时单数形式可以表示集合意义(不可数)：

      Literary work does not pay in Spain. 在西班牙文学作品得不到应有的报酬。

      ④表示“工事”、 “工程”, 通常用复数形式：

      They had to break through the enemy’s works. 他们必须突破敌人的堡垒。

      3.派生与合成词

      ①worker n. 工人(可数)

      ②workforce n. 劳动力(不可数)

      ③workmate n. 同事, 工友(可数)

      ④workshop n. 车间(可数)
