      large letter＝“大写字母”吗

      ■外语教学与研究出版社翻译出版的《牛津英语搭配词典》（Oxford Collocations Dictionary for Students of English）的 letter 词（见该书第 914 页）有这一个句子：

      His name was written in large white letters over the doorway.

      该词典给出的翻译是：他的名字用白色的大写字母写在门的上方。

      ■但笔者认为将 large letters 译为“大写字母”不妥。large letter的意是“大字母”“大型字母”“写得很大的字母”，“大写字母”的英文是 capital (letter)。如：

      The large letters are in 7.5 point type, and the small letters are in 6 point. 大的字母是7.5P，小的字母是6P。——《剑桥国际英语词典》（Cambridge International Dictionary of English）

      He wrote the title in capitals. 他用大写字母写下题目。——《麦克米伦高阶美语词典》(Macmillan Essential Dictionary for Advanced Learners of American English)

      In this sentence, the word BIG is in capitals. 本句中BIG一字用的是大写字母。——《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》(1989年第四版)

      ■有趣的是，small letter既可表示“写得很小的字母”，也可以表示“小写字母”。如：

      Fill in your answers in capital letters, not small letters. 答案用大写字母填写，不要用小写字母。——《牛津高阶英汉双解词典》(1989年第四版)

      ■金盾出版社出版的《英语基础词汇用法词典》的capital词条指出：

      ……请注意 in large letters 的意思是“用大字体”，而不是用大写字母，因为小写字母也可以有大字体形式。

      ■顺便说一句，要表示英语的“大写字母”和“小写字母”，还可使用 upper case和 lower case。
