MONTEVIDEO, Feb. 13 -- UruguayanPresidentTabareVazquezandArgentinePresidentMauricioMacrionWednesdayexpressedtheirwishtoreviveregionalintegrationfollowingameetingintheUruguayandepartmentofColonia.
Duringthemeeting, bothleadersevaluatedthesituationoftheSouthernCommonMarket (Mercosur), accordingtoajointstatementreleasedafterthemeeting.
VazquezandMacri "agreed, becauseofitsimportance, torevivetheprocessofregionalintegrationanditsmodernizationwithrespecttoprospectsandprocedurestocarryouttradeagreementswithcountriesintheoutlyingregionorwithotherregionalblocs," thestatementsaid.
Mercosur, establishedbytheTreatyofAsuncionin 1991 andProtocolofOuroPretoin 1994, wasaimedatpromotingfreetradeandthefreeflowofgoods, peopleandcurrency. ItsfullmembersincludeArgentina, Brazil, ParaguayandUruguay.
Inaddition, theyalsoagreedto "continueholdingperiodicalpresidentialmeetingsorbetweenthepresidentialteamsasawaytokeepevaluatingtheprogressoftheissuesthathadbeenraisedpreviously," itadded.
"Finally, theystressedtheexcellentrelationsmaintainedbybothnationsandgovernmentsalongthetwobanksoftheRiodelaPlata," accordingtothestatement.
Inaddition, thetwoleaders "analyzedthepoliticalandsocialsituationintheBolivarianRepublicofVenezuela."
