Cancertoppedthelistofthe 10 mostlethaldiseasesforurbanresidentslastyear, followedbycerebrovasculardiseasesandheartailments, accordingtothesurveyin 30 citiesand 78 countiesreleasedbytheMinistryofHealth. "Themainreasonbehindtherisingnumberofcancercasesisthatpollutionoftheenvironment, waterandairisgettingworsedaybyday," saidChenZhizhou, ahealthexpertwiththecancerresearchinstituteaffiliatedtotheChineseAcademyofMedicalSciences. "Manychemicalandindustrialenterprisesarebuiltalongriverssothattheycandumpthewasteintowatereasily," Chensaid. "Excessiveuseoffertilizersandpesticidesalsopolluteundergroundwater. "Thecontaminatedwaterhasdirectlyaffectedsoil, cropsandfood," headded. Airpollutionisamajorcauseoflungcancers, asharmfulgranulesenterthelungsandcannotbedischarged. Largeamountsofformaldehydeanditscompoundsusedinhouserenovationsandfurniturehasbeenblamedfordeteriorationinairquality. Inaddition, farmersuseadditivesonpigs, poultryandvegetablestomakethemgrowfaster. Thesurvey, thefirstofitskindinrecentyears, showedthatthedeathratefromcancerhasrisento 19 percentincitiesand 23 percentinruralareas. Inruralareas, 92 percentoffatalitieswerecausedby 10 illnesses, thefirstthreebeingcancer, cerebrovasculardiseasesandrespiratorydiseases. Reportson "cancervillages" havepoppedupfrequentlyinrecentyears. AninvestigativestorybyXinhualastJunesaidahighrateofcancerdeathshasbecomearealityinareaswheretheenvironmentisheavilypolluted. InShangbaVillageofGuangdongProvince, forinstance, morethan 250 peoplediedofcancerfrom 1987 to 2005; whileinHuangmengyingVillageofHenanProvince, morethan 114 peoplediedofcancerbetween 1991 and 2005. Similarcaseswerealsoreportedinotherprovinces, withtheusageofheavily-pollutedwaterbeingthecommonfactor.
