Thedegreeofsecrecynaturallyvariesconsiderably. Someofthebiggerfirmsareengagedinresearcheswhichareofsuchgeneralandfundamentalnaturethatitisapositiveadvantagetothemnottokeepthemsecret. Yetagreatmanyprocessesdependingonsuchresearcharesoughtforwithcompletesecrecyuntilthestageatwhichpatentscanbetakenout. Evenmoreprocessesareneverpatentedatallbutkeptassecretprocesses. Thisappliesparticularlytochemicalindustries, wherechancediscoveriesplayamuchlargerpartthantheydoinphysicalandmechanicalindustries. Sometimesthesecrecygoestosuchanextentthatthewholenatureoftheresearchcannotbementioned. Manyfirms, forinstance, havegreatdifficultyinobtainingtechnicalorscientificbooksfromlibrariesbecausetheyareunwillingtohavenamesenteredashavingtakenoutsuchandsuchabook, forfeartheagentsofotherfirmsshouldbeabletotracethekindofresearchtheyarelikelytobeundertaking.
