ManyideasthatcameoutofSiliconValleynowdefinesociety—thepersonalcomputer, thesearchenginethathasdemocratizedknowledge, and, inStanford’sownIndustrialPark, theoncetinycompany, HP, thatisnowtheworld’slargesttechnologycorporation.[1] Lastyear, I, too, gotintothegame, creatingapatentforliveservicesdeliveredthroughacell-phone. ThoughIwasnotfamiliarwiththesciencebehindphones, Iprovidedinsighttowardtheuser’sabilitytointeractwiththehandset.[2]
Bymergingknowledgeofthetechnicalaspectsofphoneswithahumanities-basedanalysisofitsusage, anIKainresearchengineerandItogethercreatedasuccessfulpatent.[3] ThoughthispatentwillnotbeasearthshakingasGoogle’ssearchengine, itsharesacommonthemewithotherSiliconValleyinnovations: theinteractionoftechnology, humanities, andinformation.[4]
Stanfordisaplacewheremiraclestakeplaceeveryday—inthestudentdorms, intheundergroundlabs, andinthegaragesofrentedhouses.[5] Allthesemiracles, allthesesupercreativity, arenotjusthappeningbecauseofthesmartcollectionofpeopleStanfordhasassembled[6]. ItisalsoitsuniqueculturethatStanfordhasfostered[7] . Specially, Stanfordhasanopenattitudetowardknowledgeinteractionandintegration[8] inthebroadestsense. Whendisciplineboundariesareobliterated, whenknowledgefrommanydisciplinesfreelyintermingle, miraclehappens.[9]
