泽泻科慈姑属，一年生沼泽植物。叶基生，线形或线状披针形，长6—14厘米，宽3—8毫米,先端渐尖，略钝，基部1厘米鞘状，边缘膜质，全缘，无柄，纵脉3—5条，基出，平行，其间横脉多数，与纵脉正交几等粗。花序柄长6—20厘米，直立，花序长4—5厘米，花2—3轮，每轮有花2—3朵。雌花通常1朵，居下轮，无柄；雄花2—5，具长1—2.5厘米的细梗；苞片长椭圆形，钝；萼片倒卵形，花瓣白色，比萼片稍长；雄蕊通常12，花丝宽、短,花药长圆形；心皮多数；集成球形。瘦果宽倒卵形，长3毫米，宽4—5毫米，扁平，两侧具薄翅，顶端圆形，有鸡冠状锯齿。花期7—10月。
产云南腾冲，生于水田中；四川(屏山)、贵州、广西、广东、台湾、江西、湖北、江苏、安徽、浙江、河南、陕西也有，分布于朝鲜、日本。
全草供药用，能清热、解毒、利尿；治疮毒、湿疹、喉炎。
