Universitiesareconcentratingonpopularsubjectsanddroppingcoursesthathavetoofewapplicantsoraretooexpensivetorun.
Officialfiguresshowacullofmorethan 2,600 inthenumberofcoursesavailabletoapplicantsplanningtostarttheirdegreesin 2013.
Morethan 5,200 courseshadalreadybeenremovedforstudentsbeginningthisyear - thefirstcohorttofacethehigherfees.
Universitiesdumpedsomeofthecoursesevenafterprospectuseswentonlineearlierthisyearandinsomecasesafterapplicationsbegan, accordingtoreportsyesterday.
NewsoftheclosurescomeasUCASfigurespublishedlastweekshowedthatthenumberofstudentsinEnglandapplyingforuniversityplacesin 2013 hasplungedbyalmost 10 percentalready.
NumbersofEUandnon-EUstudentsapplicantshavealsodropped.
ThescrappedcoursesrangefromarcheologyatBirminghamtolanguagesatSalfordandLondonMetropolitan.
Birminghamhadannouncedsixweeksagothatsinglehonoursarcheologywouldnolongerbeofferedbecause ‘ithasprovedunabletoattractsufficientapplicantsoftheappropriatequality’.
ThenumberofcourseslistedbyUCAShasfallenfrom 43,360 to 35,501 intwoyears.
