Pakistan’sForeignMinistryconfirmedtheauthenticityofthereportbutdeclinedtocommentonit.
TheindependentcommitteewascommissionedfollowingoutragewithinPakistanovertheU.S. raidin 2011. Thepanelinterviewedmorethan 200 people, includingbinLaden’swivesandcouriers, seniormilitaryandintelligenceofficialsandlocalofficialsinAbbottabad.
Accordingtothoseinterviews, thereportestablishesatimelinethatfirstplacesbinLadeninPakistaninearly 2002 afterheevadedU.S. captureduringthebattleofBoraBorainAfghanistan. Thoughgapsremaininhiswhereaboutsduringthattime, thereportsuggestsbinLadentraveledthroughoutnorthwesternPakistanforseveralyears, settlingatdifferenttimesinPeshawarandSwat, amilitantstronghold. Fortwoyears, binLadenthenlivedin “abighousewithtwohallways, threebedrooms” inHaripur, lessthan 50 milesfromthePakistanicapitalofIslamabad.
In 2005, binLadenmovedhisextendedfamilytoAbbottabad, wherehelikelyremainedforsixyearsuntiltheNavySealslandedtwohelicoptersandblastedthroughadoorandkilledhim, accordingtoareport. Localofficialssaidtheyweresurprisedhewasthere, andthereportnotesthatbinLadenwasisolatedandthathischildrenrarelywentoutside.
