      TheU.S. isawarding $15,000 eachtofivepairsofU.S. andEthiopianuniversitiesforresearchanddevelopmentprojects.

      OnepartnershipisbetweentheUniversityofMarylandandDebreBirhanUniversity, inEthiopia. ThepartnerswillusethemoneytotrainEthiopianwomentogrowcropsthroughouttheyear. Theywillteachstudentsinbothclassroomsandonfarms. TheirgoalistohelpEthiopiafightfoodinsecurity.

      TheU.S. AgencyforInternationalDevelopmentsayswomenperformupto 75 percentofallfarmlaborinEthiopia, thatrepresents 70 percentofhouseholdfoodproduction. Butthesewomenoftenproduceupto 35 percentlessthanmalefarmers, becausetheyreceivelesshelp.

      BeckyRamsingisanadvisorattheUniversityofMaryland. ShesaysshehopestheprogramwillhelpwomeninEthiopiawhomightnothaveanyotherwaytogettraining.

      "Ifyougivethewomantheresourcesthoseresourceswilldirectlygotothefamily. Andwhenwomenaregivenaddedincomeorareabletoraisemorefood, thatdirectlyrelatestothechildrenandtheeducationandnutritionofthechild," Ramsingsaid.

      Ms. RamsingsaystheprogramwillfirsttrainteachersandofficialsatDebreBirhanUniversity. Then, thoseteachersandofficialswillteachwomenusefulfarmingskills, suchashowtogrowfoodinsmallplaces.

      "Someofthesewomendon'thaveaccesstoland. Howcanwedocontainergardeningandverticalgardening, livestockslikesmallpoultry?"Ramsingsaid.

      TsigemariamBasheisanofficialofDebreBirhanuniversity. Ms. Bashesaystheprogramaimstodomorethanteachfarming. Thelargerpurpose, shesays, istohelpwomencareforthemselvesandtheirfamilies.

      "Empoweringwomenisempoweringthewholepopulationorempoweringthesociety," Bashesaid.

      HailuTerefealsoworksatDebreBirham. Hesaysinsomepartsofthecountryonlymenaretaughthowtofarm.

      "ThereisculturaldifferencesinEthiopia. Alloftheregionsdonothavethesameculture. Thereareregionsthatwomenarenotallowedtogoforagriculturalpractices," Terefesaid.

      TsigemariamBashehopesthewomenwhoaretrainedwillthentrainotherwomen.

      "Ihope, Ihopeinthenearfuturewomensintheprojectbecomesthecommunityeducator," Bashesaid.

      FourotherAmericanuniversitiesreceivedawardsforresearchanddevelopmentpartnerships. TheU.S. StateDepartmentandDepartmentofEducationgavetheawards, inpart, tostrengthentheabilitiesofteachersandschoolofficialsinboththeU.S. andEthiopia.
