ManypeopleinHanoihaveexpressedangeraboutthegovernment’splantocutdownthousandsofthecity’strees. Theyhaveprotestedaroundthecityandonsocialmedia. AFacebookpagetitled “6,700 peoplefor 6,700 trees” setuplastTuesdayhasalreadyreceivednearly 50,000 "likes."
Theplan, atthecostof $3.4 million, involvedcuttingdown 6,700 ofHanoi’strees. AccordingtothenewspaperThanhNien, thetrees, morethanaquarterofallthetreesinthecity, areconsidereddangerousandunattractive. Thenewspaperquestionedwhatwouldbedonewiththetimber – orwoodfromthetrees. TimberisconsideredhighlyvaluableinVietnam.
LastFriday, after 500 treeshadalreadybeencut, thechairmanoftheHanoiPeople’sCommitteeannouncedthatthetree-cuttingplanwouldbesuspended.
OnSunday, about 500 peopleheldhandsoutsideaparkinHanoitoprotesttheplan. Theyworespecialt-shirtsandcarriedsignswiththewords “TreeHugsHanoi.”
ProtesterDucAnhsaidmanypeoplewereworriedabouttheplan. HesaidHanoiansandtouristslovethecity’streesformanyreasons. Theyaregoodfortheenvironment. Healsosaidmanypeoplefeelanemotionalconnectiontothetrees. Manyofthetreesareasoldashisgrandparents.
OnFacebook, manyHanoianswroteaboutthetrees’ specialplaceinthecity, aswell. StudentVuThanhPhongsaidthetreeswereoneofHanoi’sgreatassets. HesaidthetreesarepartofwhatmakesHanoiunique. Withoutthem, thecitywouldnotbeasspecial.
AboutaquarterofVietnam’spopulationusesFacebook. Thesitehasbecomeapowerfultoolforsocialchange. SeveralprotestersattheTreeHugeventworet-shirtsconnectedtoadifferentcampaign, whichalsobeganonsocialmedia. ThecampaigncalledonofficialsincentralVietnamtostopaplantobuildacablecarinSonDoong, oneoftheworld’slargestcaves.
ThanhThuwaspartofthatcampaign. HesaidtheattentiononFacebookhelpedmakethegovernmentrethinktheproject.
“WhentheyconsideredthefactorofenvironmentandeconomyandtheysawthatSonDoongshouldbeprotected ... theywillnotbuildanythinguntil 2030,” hesaid.
ThanhThusayshehopessocialmediacampaignslikethiswillencouragepeopletothinkmoreaboutotherpeople. Hehopespeoplewillbecomemoreactiveinprotectingtheenvironment.
