GeorgeOrwell’sessay “PoliticsandtheEnglishLanguage”, publishedin 1946, tookaimatthebureaucrats, academicsandhackswhoobfuscatedtheirmisdeedsinvague, jargon-packedwriting.
Abstractions, euphemismsandclichésallservedas “thedefenceoftheindefensible”.
Orwelllamentedhow “Millionsofpeasantsarerobbedoftheirfarmsandsenttrudgingalongtheroadswithnomorethantheycancarry: thisiscalledtransferofpopulationorrectificationoffrontiers.

OnOctober 7thanopenletterfromaclutchofstudentgroupsatHarvardUniversityvaguelydescribedthe “unfoldingviolence” inIsraelwithoutascribingblametoHamas.
Abstractbrutality “unfolding” shocksratherlessthanaclearerdescriptionofHamasslaughtering 1,200 Israelis, nearlyallcivilians, includingmanychildren.
AsaonetimecontributortotheBBC, itiseasytoimagineOrwelldefyingthebroadcaster’srefusaltousetheword “terrorism”.
Orwellhadnotroubledolingouthismedicinetobothsides; hewouldhavealsohadharshwordsforthosedescribingthe “collateraldamage” buriedinGazanrubble, anotherabstractiondesignedtopreventreaderspicturingdeadchildren.
Around 13,000 PalestinianshavediedsinceOctober 7th.
Orwell’sfamousessayhadalongleadtime: hewaspaidinDecember, anditappearedinprintthenextApril.

Thedesiretograbattentionseemstoincentivisestylisticsin.
Thesocial-mediaficationofwritinghassteeredthetonefromtheoffenceofeuphemismtoitstwinoffenceofexaggeration.
TakingwhattheynodoubtbelievetobeanOrwellianstartingpoint—thedangerofbeingtoosoftintheirlanguage—keyboardwarriorscannotresistthetemptationtoreachforthemostinflammatorywordsavailable.
Whatusedtobecalledchauvinism, thensexism, isnow “misogyny”, awordoncereservedforactualhatredofwomen.
Thosewhodonotascribetoleft-wingviewsonraceareaccusednotofbias, prejudiceorevenracism, butof “whitesupremacy”, aphrasethatjustadecadeagowasreservedforneo-Nazis.
Callitthe “dysphemismtreadmill”.
Initsopposite, the “euphemismtreadmill” (atermcoinedbyStevenPinker, aprofessoratHarvard), peoplerunfromonepolitebanalitytoanother.
Theyreferredtopeopleas “idiotic” untilthatbecamepejorative; thentheyoptedfor “retarded”, whichbecameunsayable; andthentheydevised “special”, whichisnowataunttoo.
Thedysphemismtreadmillworkstheotherwayround: “prejudiced” seemstoomildsoisreplacedwith “racist”, whichthensuffersthesamefateandmustbeswappedoutfor “whitesupremacist”.
Asistrueofmanymoderntrends, themostextremewordshaveradiatedfromAmerica, where “communist” and “fascist” havenothingtodowithsicklesorswastikasandaresometimesappliedtoanyoneyoudisagreewith.
Socialmedia, the “greatawokening” ontheleftandtheMAGAficationoftherighthavecontributedtoaverbalcrescendo.

Spainisnotsomuchwitnessingacoupasapoliticalzoo.
Theworstcrimeimaginable—“genocide”—isalsobeingbandiedaboutmoreoften.
ThewordisusedcorrectlywhendescribingtheArabmilitiasinSudanwhoareroundingupblackAfricantribes, suchastheMasalit, murderingmenandboys, rapingwomenandsaying “thebabywillbeanArab”.
Butthoseusingtheterm “genocide” tocharacteriseIsraeliattacksonciviliansinGazaarenothewingstrictlytowhattheword’sdefinitionis, whichistheintentionaldestructionofpeopleforthemerefactoftheirethnicity.

Youcannotoutshoutthecrowds.
Sodistinguishyourselvesbychoosingaccurate, vividwordsbetweentheevasionsofeuphemismandthetemptationsofexaggeration.
Crimesagainstlanguage, inthelongrun, makeithardertodescribecrimesagainsthumanity.
