Elders, ontheotherhand, aresupposedtorelaxandenjoytheirretirementtothefullestextent. However, Ihaveatotallydifferentperspectiveonthisissueandtendtobelievethatolderpeopleneedtoexplorenewthingsmorethanyoungpeople.
Admittedly, youngpeoplearegenerallymorehealthyandenergeticthantheelders, henceitismorelikelyforthemtocomeupwithnewideasandperspectivesthanelders. Indeed, aswecantellthatprofessionalsindifferentfieldslikescientists, businessmen, lawyerstendtohavebemorecompetitiveandsharpwhentheyareatayoungage, actually, researchshowsthattheaverageageofbillionairesiswellbelow40. Nonetheless, itismoreimportantforelderstostaytouchwiththelatesttrendandcontinuetheirlifelonglearning.
Firstandforemost, continuedlearningmakesitpossibleforelderstostayintouchwiththecurrentsandbuildadeeperconnectionwithyoungerfamilymembers. Theonlythingthatdoesn'tchangeintoday'sworldischangeitself, newelectronicgadgets, innovativetreatmenttocureincurablediseases, creativebusinessideasandapproachesthatareunthinkableinthepast, younameit. Itcanbedisastrousifeldersstopbeinganactivelearnerandretreattotheprimitivemindset. Forinstance, youngpeoplearefondofnewelectronicdeviceslikeipad, iphoneandstuff, andtheyusethesegadgetstostayintouchwiththeirpeersandfamilies. Ifagrandpahasnotevenheardoftwitterorinstagram, itwillbeimpossibleforthetwogenerationstostayconnected.
Additionally, ahostofresearchdonebyaworldfamouspsychiatristshowthatelderswhogiveuplearningandhavenoaccesstonewideastendtosufferfromdementiaandAlzheimer. Ontheotherhand, othersearchshowsthatelderswhokeeplearningwillstayintouchwiththeworldandaremorehealthierbothphysicallyandmentally. Basedonmypersonalexperience, Ifindeldersaroundwhoarewillingtolearnandembracenewthingsarelessdependentontheirfamiliesandtendtobebetterconnectedwiththeirchildrenandgrandchildren. Plus, theyaremorecreativeandproductivewhentheyaccesstheirfrontallobeandavoidtheirprimitivemindset. Stayingactiveandkeepingexploringnewthingsmakeitpossibleforseniorstoseekforthetruemeaningandvalueoflife, whichinturnwillinspireandmotivateyoungergenerationtotakerisksandacceptchallengesinlife.
Inanutshell, wecansafelydrawtheconclusionthatitisbetterforelderstotakerisksandexploreinnewendeavorsthantheyoungergenerationssinceithelpseldersreconnectwiththeirfamiliesandmakesthemmoreindependent, productiveandinspirational.
