Asmorespecieswerestudied, itbecameevidentthatthisclassificationwasinadequate. Afencelizardoradesertiguana-eachcold-blooded----usuallyhasabodytemperatureonlyadegreeortwobelowthatofhumansandsoisnotcold. Thereforethenextdistinctionwasmadebetweenanimalsthatmaintainaconstantbodytemperature, calledhome0therms, andthosewhosebodytemperaturevarieswiththeirenvironments, calledpoikilotherms. Butthisclassificationalsoprovedinadequate, becauseamongmammalstherearemanythatvarytheirbodytemperaturesduringhibernation.
