      MutationsaresmallchangesinDNAthatcanhappenwhenacelldividesinanattempttocopyitself. Thesesmallchangescaninfluenceaperson'sphysicalappearanceorcontrolaperson'sabilitytofightadisease.
      Thenewly-discoveredmutationsshowthatidenticaltwinsdohavegeneticdifferences, theresearcherssaid. TheresultswererecentlypublishedinNatureGenetics.
      Onaverage, identicaltwinshave 5.2 oftheseearlygeneticdifferences, theresearchersfound. Butabout 15 percentofidenticaltwinpairshavemorethanthat. Somemighthaveasmanyas 100 geneticdifferences, Stefanssonsaid.
      Thesedifferencesrepresentasmallpartofeachtwin'sgeneticmaterial. Buttheycouldinfluencewhyonetwinistallerorwhyoneisatgreaterriskforsomecancersthantheother.

      Studyingfamilymemberspermittedtheresearcherstoexaminewhengeneticmutationshappenedintwodifferentkindsofcells: thosepresentinonlyoneindividualandthosepassedontotheperson'schildren.
      Stefanssonsaidhisteamfoundtwinswhereamutationispresentinallcellsofthebodyofonetwin, butnotintheothertwinatall. However, "sometimesthesecondtwinmayshowthemutationinsomecells, butnotallcells," headded.
      Theresearcherssaidtheyalsofoundmutationsthatcameaboutbeforethedevelopingembryosplitintwo.
