FirstImagesTakenofRareGorillawithBabies
AconservationgrouphascapturedthefirstimagesofrareCrossRivergorillaswiththeirbabies. Scientistsoncefearedthatthisrarekindofgorillahaddisappearedfromexistence. But, theimagesshowitisreproducingaseffortstoprotecttheanimalcontinue.
TheWildlifeConservationSociety, orWCS, hadplacedcamerasinanareaofNigeria'sMbemountains, wheretheCrossRivergorillaslive. Theorganizationrecentlyreleasedtheimages, whichweretakeninMay. ThecameracapturedimagesofCrossRivergorillaadultsandbabies.
Astatementonthegroup'swebsitedescribesCrossRivergorillasas "themostthreatenedapeinAfrica." ThesegorillasliveinasmallmountainousareaatthebeginningoftheRiverCross, alongtheborderbetweenNigeriaandCameroon.
Onlyaround 300 CrossRivergorillaswereknowntobealiveinthearea, notedWCS.
Althoughillegalhuntingiscommoninthearea, theCrossRivergorillaisrarelyatargetofsuchactivity, saysWCS. Buthuntersoftenuseanimaltrapsthatrepresentathreattothegorilla'ssurvival.
JohnOatesisaformerprofessorattheCityUniversityofNewYorkandaprimatologist. Hehelpedestablishconservationeffortsforthegorillasmorethan 20 yearsago.
"Itwasgreattosee ... evidencethatthesegorillasinthesemountainsarereproducingsuccessfullybecausetherehavebeensofewimagesinthepast," hetoldTheAssociatedPress. "Weknowverylittleaboutwhatisgoingonwithreproductionwiththissubspecies, sotoseemanyyounganimalsisapositivesign."
