LONDON, June 9 -- BritainwillnotextenditstransitionallinkstotheEuropeanUnion (EU) beyondDec. 31, agovernmentministersaidTuesdayfollowingthestalledtalksbetweenLondonandBrusselslastweek.
PennyMordaunt, theBritishgovernment'spostmastergeneraltoldtheHouseofCommons (lowerhouseofparliament) thattoagreetoanextensionwouldjustextendthenegotiatingperiodwiththeEUandprolonguncertainty.
Mordaunt, updatinglawmakersonthefourthroundoftalksbetweentheBritishgovernmentandtheEU, saidtherehadbeennoprogressonprincipleissuesduringlastweek'stalks.
"Therearesomeverytoughareas, oneofthemonfishing. Weareaskingforour (fishing) rightstobeupheldandwearenotwaveringfromthat," shesaid.
BritainendeditsmembershipofthebloconJan. 31 butisstillfollowingEUrulesduringatransitionperioduntilDec. 31 toenableapermanentfuturetradedealtobereached. Duringthisperiod, BritainwouldhavetopayintoEUfundsbuthavenosayinlawsimposedbyBrussels.
MordauntresistedanumberofcallsfromoppositionMPstoextendthetransitionperiodbyuptoayear.
Shesaidthegovernmentwantedtoagreeonadealasearlyaspossibletoenablebusinessestomakepreparations.
"Weneedtoconcludethenegotiationsandgetagoodoutcometogiveourcitizensandbusinessestopreparefornewborderarrangements. ThepeopleofBritaindonotwanttogobacktouncertainty, theywantclarity," shesaid, addingthatagooddealisintheinterestsofbothsides.
