Throughpublictip-offsandrandomchecks, inspectorslookedinto 33,000 casesandimposedfinestotalling 440 millionyuan (about 63.6 millionU.S. dollars) afterthecentralgovernment'sinspectionstoseveralprovincesandmunicipalitiesincludingBeijingandShanghai.
In 2016, thegovernmentrefused 11 high-pollutionandhigh-energyconsumingprojects, involvingtotalinvestmentsof 97 billionyuan, accordingtotheconference.
Lastyear, atotalof 4.05 millionhigh-emissionvehiclesweretakenoffthecountry'sroads.
Partlyduetothoseefforts, ChinesecitiesreportedlessPM2.5 pollutionin 2016, withtheaveragedensityofPM2.5 in 338 citiesfallingby 6 percent.
