TheTimesbaseditsstoryonaccountsfrommorethanahalf-dozencurrentandformerofficials, someofwhomsaidthey "werespeakingtodrawattentiontothematerialandensureproperinvestigationbyCongress," thenewspapersaid.
ThereportsaysinformationcamefrommultipleU.S. allies, includingBritainandtheNetherlands, describingmeetingsbetweenRussianofficialsandTrumpassociatesthattookplaceinEuropeancities. ItalsocitesU.S. intelligenceagencyinterceptsofRussianofficialsdiscussingcontactswithTrumpassociates.
"TheonlynewpieceofinformationthathascometolightisthatpoliticalappointeesintheObamaadministrationhavesoughttocreateafalsenarrativetomakeanexcusefortheirowndefeatintheelection," theTimesquotedSpicerassaying.
TheTimessaidthelatedaysoftheObamaadministrationfeaturedofficialsworkingtoprocessrawintelligenceinformationintoreportsthatwerekeptatalowlevelofclassificationtoensuremorepeoplecouldseethem, andtopassalongreportsandsensitiveinformationtomembersofCongress.
