WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 -- U.S. AttorneyGeneralJeffSessionssaidonFridaythatpackagebombsuspectCesarSayoc, ofFlorida, isinthecustodyoftheFBIandhasbeenchargedwithfivefederalcrimes.
"Hehasbeenchargedtodaywith 5 federalcrimes, includinginterstatetransportationofanexplosive, illegalmailingofexplosives, threatsagainstformerpresidentsandcertainotherpersons," Sessionstoldapressconferenceannouncingthecharges.
Thedefendantfacesupto 58 yearsinprisoniffoundguiltyandchargesagainsthim "chargesmaychangeorexpandastheinvestigationproceeds," Sessionssaid.
"Wewillnottoleratesuchlawlessness, especiallypoliticalviolence," hesaid.
Sayoc, 56, isaccusedofsendingmorethanadozenpipebombsthroughthemailtoprominentDemocraticfigures, includingformerPresidentBarackObamaandformerU.S. SecretaryofStateHillaryClinton, aswellasliberalnewschannelcnn.
FBIDirectorChristopherWraytoldreportersthatfederalauthoritieshavelocated 13 improvisedexplosivedevicesthatweresimilarlyassembledandthattheywere "nothoaxdevices."
Eachofthepipebombscontainedmaterialsthatcouldreactandcauseapotentialexplosion, accordingtoWray.
Hesaidthatit'stooearlytodiscussamotivebehindthepipebombs, noneofwhichexplodedandledtoinjuries.
