KUWAITCITY, June 23 -- U.S. SpecialRepresentativeforIranBrianHookonSundaycalledontheworldtourgeIrantode-escalatetensionsintheGulfregion.
AtapressconferenceheldinKuwaitCity, capitalofKuwait, Hooksaid "weencourageallnationstousetheirdiplomaticeffortstourgeIrantode-escalatetensions."
U.S. isnotseekinganarmedconflictagainstIran, Hooksaid, affirmingthatU.S. doesnotseektoincreasetensionintheregion.
"WearenotinterestedinmilitaryconflictagainstIran; wehaveenhancedourforces' posturesintheregionforpurelydefensivepurposes," henoted.
"WeaimtobringIranbacktothenegotiatingtable. Iran'sdangerousactionsrequireinternationalcooperationtoreducethreats," Hooksaid.
HepraisedKuwait'sroleasafactorforsupportingstabilityintheregion.
"KuwaitpresidesovertheSecurityCouncilinJuneandwewilltalkwiththemaboutwaystoeasetheconflict," hesaid.
"WesharewithKuwaitourdesireandcommitmenttoprotectingshippingroutesafterIranthreatensnavigationroutesintheregionandtherecentincidentsthataffectedcountries," hesaid.
KuwaitisaleadingcountryintheGulfCooperationCouncilandplayswithothercountriesaspecialroletosupportdiplomacyandpeace, hesaid.
"ThepresenceoftheU.S. militaryinKuwaitistogivesecurityandstabilityintheregionandweareproudofthisrelationshipbetweenthetwocountries," Hookadded.
