KHARTOUM, Oct. 7 -- TheUnitedNationsCountryTeam (UNCT) inSudanonSaturdaywelcomedtheU.S. decisiontolifttheeconomicsanctionsonSudan, vowingtocooperatewithSudanandinternationalpartnerstoachievestabilityinthecountry.
"Theteamrecognizesallthecollectiveeffortsexertedbyallparties, especiallytheGovernmentofSudanwhichinthepastninemonthshasdemonstratedthroughconcreteprogressthecountry'sinterestinimprovinghumanitarianaccessthroughoutthecountry," theUNCTsaidinastatement.
"Whilerecognizingthesemilestones, theUNandothermultilateralorganizationscontinuetoengagetheGovernmentofSudantoenablefurthercooperationonhumanitariananddevelopmentprioritiestoimprovestabilityinthecountryandthroughouttheregion," itadded.
TheUNCTfurthervowedtocontinuetopromoteinternationalcooperationtoovercomechallengeswithalltheentitiesoftheUNsystemthatcarryoutdevelopment, emergency, recoveryandtransitionactivitiesinSudan.
TheUnitedStatesonFridaydecidedtoliftitseconomicsanctionsonSudanpermanently, citingSudan's "sustainedpositiveactionstomaintainacessationofhostilitiesinconflictareasinSudan, improvehumanitarianaccessthroughoutSudan, andmaintaincooperationwiththeUnitedStatesonaddressingregionalconflictsandthethreatofterrorism."
TheU.S. StateDepartmentannouncedthatthedecisionwouldgointoeffectasofcurrentOct. 12.
