MEXICOCITY, Sept. 1 -- TropicalstormLidiaclaimedfourlivesandtoppledabuildingasitbarreledthroughthesouthernportionofMexico'snorthweststateofBajaCaliforniaSur, localauthoritiesreportedonFriday.
Twomenwereelectrocutedbydownedelectricitylines, awomandrownedafterfallingintoacreekandaminorwassnatchedfromitsmother'sarmsandsweptawaybyastrongcurrent, thestate'sundersecretaryofCivilProtection, CarlosGodinez, toldalocalradiostation.
ThestormmadelandfallinthispartofMexico'sBajaCaliforniaPeninsulaat 7:15 a.m. localtime, saidGodinez.
Officialswerecloselywatchingtoseehowmuchdamagethestormwouldwreakinthestate'ssoutherntip, whichishometoMexico'supscaleresortofLosCabos, akeytouristdestinationandrevenuegenerator.
Apparentlythestorm'spassingleftLosCabossoakingandlargelywithoutpower, butotherwiserelativelyunscathed, accordingtoPresidentEnriquePenaNieto.
"TheairportshaveopenedinLosCabos, conveniencestoresareoperatingand (theFederalElectricityCommission) reestablishedserviceto 25,000 ofthe 102,000 (homes) affected," PenasaidonTwitter.
Afour-storybuildingbuiltnearacreekinLosCaboscollapsedfromtheheavyrainsandwinds, andanotherwasevacuatedasaprecautionarymeasureaftershowingstructuraldefects.
