BAGHDAD, Sept. 2 -- TheIraqiforceskilledover 2,000 IslamicState (IS) militantsandmorethan 50 suicidebombersduringamajoroffensivetofreeTalAfarareainwestofMosul, theIraqimilitarysaidonSaturday.
"TheIStotalcasualtiesintheblitzkriegduringtheperiodfromAug. 20 to 31 weremorethan 2,000 terroristsandover 50 suicidebombers, alongwithdestroyinganddetonatingof 77 carbombs, 71 booby-trappedbuildingsand 990 roadsidebombs," Lt. Gen. AbdulAmirYarallahfromtheJointOperationsCommand (JOC) saidatatelevisedpressconference.
Morethan 40,000 IraqifightersfromtheIraqiarmy, federalpoliceanditscommandosknownasRapidResponseforcesandCounter-TerrorismService (CTS) forces, inadditiontotenbrigadesoftheparamilitaryHashdShaabifighters, participatedintheoffensive, whichwassupportedbyIraqiandinternationalcoalitionaircraft, Yarallahsaid.
YarallahalsosaidthattheIraqiforcessustained 115 martyrsand 679 woundedduringthe 12-daybattlestoliberateTalAfaranditssurroundingareas, includingthetownsofMahalabiyahandAyadhiyah.
"Thosewhotakealookatthisfigure (Iraqiforcescasualties) willrealizethatfiercebattlestookplaceinTalAfararea," Yarallahsaid.
Thetroopsevacuatedatotalof 40,758 peoplefromthecityofTalAfarandsurroundingareasbeforeandduringtheoffensive, 18,822 beforeAug. 20 and 21,936 othersduringthe 12-dayoffensive, Yarallahsaid.
