Butsupposetheearthcouldbecoveredwithsensorsspacedonefootapart, risingatone-footintervalsallthewaytothetopoftheatmosphere. Supposeeverysensorgivesperfectlyaccuratereadingsoftemperature, pressure, humidity, andanyotherquantityameteorologistwouldwant. Preciselyatnoonaninfinitelypowerfulcomputertakesallthedataandcalculateswhatwillhappenateachpointat 12.01, then 1202, then 12.03...

      ThecomputerwillstillbeunabletopredictwhetherPrinceton, NewJersey, willhavesunorrainonadayonemonthaway. Atnoonthespacesbetweenthesensorswillhidefluctuationsthatthecomputerwillnotknowabout, tinydeviationsfromtheaverage. By 12.01, thosefluctuationswillalreadyhavecreatedsmallerrorsonefootaway. Soontheerrorswillhavemultipliedtotheten-footscale, andsoonuptothesizeoftheglobe.
