TheMayorofMadrid, AlbertoRuizGallardonsaidTuesdaythattheSpanishcapitalhadnotgivenuponitsdreamofhostingtheOlympicGamesdespitethefailureofitslasttwocandidacies.
Madridwasbeateninitsattempttohostthe 2012 Games, losingouttoLondonandlastyearfinishedbehindRiodeJaneirointhefinalvotetodecidethehostcityfor 2016.
SpeakingonSpanishstatetelevisionstationTVEonTuesday, GallardonsaidthecitystillkeptitsOlympicdreamalive.
"MadridwillbeanOlympiccity," assuredGallardon, "Butweshouldnottalkaboutpresentingthecityforathirdandafourthtime. Wehavetohaveathirdpossibilityandensurethatitisdefinitive," hesaidonTVE.
Afterdefeatsin 2012 and 2016, Gallardonwasnotcertainifthecitywouldpresentacandidacyforthe 2020 Games.
"Wehavetolookcloselytoseeifitismoreintelligenttopresentacandidacyfor 2020 orfor 2024. Inordertodothatwehavetolookatwhichothercitieswillpresenttheircandidacy, seehowtheWorldCupwhichisbeingheldinAfricaturnsoutandlookatmanyotherfactors," saidtheMayor, whowillhavetofacere-electionbeforethedecisionistaken.
"Itisnotinourhandsnow. ItwillhavetobenextadministrationelectedbythepeopleofMadridthatmakesthechoice," saidGallardon.
OnethingGallardonhadclearwasthatdespitenotbeingchosentohosttheGames, Madridhadstillgainedfromitstwofailedcandidacies.
