Inolderpeoplewithmildcognitiveimpairment, havingadrinknowandthen -- uptoanaverageofonedrinkofalcoholeachday -- maydelayprogressiontodementia , newresearchsuggests.
"Whilemanystudieshaveassessedalcoholconsumptionandcognitivefunctionintheelderly, thisisthefirststudytolookathowalcoholconsumptionaffectstherateofprogressionofmildcognitiveimpairmenttodementia," studyauthorsDr. VincenzoSolfrizziandDr. FrancescoPanza, fromtheUniversityofBariinItaly, saidinastatement. Inthestudy, reportedinthemedicaljournalNeurology, theresearchersassessedtheoccurrenceofmildcognitiveimpairmentin 1445 subjectsandtheprogressiontodementiain 121 patientswithmildcognitiveimpairment. Theparticipantswerebetween 65 and 84 yearsofageatthestartofthestudy, andtheywerefollowedfor 3.5 years. Alcoholusewasassessedbeforethesurvey. Drinkingwasnotassociatedthedevelopmentofmildcognitiveimpairment, accordingtothereport. However, oncemildimpairmentoccurred, subjectswhohaduptoonedrinkperdayofalcoholhadan 85 percentreducedriskofdementiacomparedwiththosewhoabstained. Thebenefitwasseenwithbothalcoholingeneralandwithwineinparticular. Havingmorethanonedrinkaday, however, offerednoprotectionagainstdementiacomparedwithabstaining, thereportindicates. "Themechanismresponsibleforwhylowalcoholconsumptionappearstoprotectagainsttheprogressiontodementiaisn'tknown. However, itispossiblethatthearrangementofbloodvesselsinthebrainmayplayarole," SolfrizziandPanzaconclude.
