Wecanreadofthingsthathappened 5,000 yearsagointheNearEast, wherepeoplefirstlearnedtowrite. Buttherearesomepartsofthewordwhereevennowpeoplecannotwrite. Theonlywaythattheycanpreservetheirhistoryistorecountitassagas -- legendshandeddownfromonegenerationofanother. Theselegendsareusefulbecausetheycantellussomethingaboutmigrationsofpeoplewholivedlongago, butnonecouldwritedownwhattheydid. AnthropologistswonderedwheretheremoteancestorsofthePolynesianpeoplesnowlivinginthePacificIslandscamefrom. ThesagasofthesepeopleexplainthatsomeofthemcamefromIndonesiaabout 2,000 yearsago.
Butthefirstpeoplewhowerelikeourselveslivedsolongagothateventheirsagas, iftheyhadany, areforgotten. Soarchaeologistshaveneitherhistorynorlegendstohelpthemtofindoutwherethefirst 'modernmen' camefrom.
Fortunately, however, ancientmenmadetoolsofstone, especiallyflint, becausethisiseasiertoshapethanotherkinds. Theymayalsohaveusedwoodandskins, butthesehaverottedaway. Stonedoesnotdecay, andsothetoolsoflongagohaveremainedwheneventhebonesofthemenwhomadethemhavedisappearedwithouttrace.
