Ifmanysuchchainswerecreatedinadifferentiallyrotatinggalaxy, thedistributionofstarswouldresembletheobserveddistributeinaspiralgalaxy.
Thislineofreasoningunderliesanexcitingnewtheoryofspiral-galaxystructure. Acomputersimulationbasedonthistheoryhasreproducedtheappearanceofmanyspiralgalaxieswithoutassuminganunderlyingdensitywave, thehallmarkofthemostwidelyacceptedtheoryofthelarge-scalestructureofspiralgalaxies. Thattheorymaintainsthatadensitywaveofspiralformsweepsthroughthecentralplaneofagalaxy, compressingcloudsofgasanddust, whichcollapseintostarsthatformaspiralpattern.
