The 2010 WinterOlympicshostcityVancouverisexpectedtoturnouttobeafuncityduringthegames, accordingtothemayorwhoannouncedtheLiveCityprogramWednesday. TheprogramdesignatestwopartyplazasinVancouver'scentralareasforahugenumberofOlympicvisitors, amovewhichGregorRobertsonhopescouldchangethecity's "no-fun" image.
"Itwillbethefinalnailinthatcoffin," saidthemayor. "Thisisnota 'no-fun' city. Ithinkwe'lldemonstratethatinspadesattheOlympics."
BeerandwinewillbeallowedatLiveCityDowntown, oneofthetwoOlympiclivesites, GregorRobertsonsaid.
"Thedowntownsiteismoreforfoodanddrink," saidRobertson. "We'llhavesomealcohol, sopeoplecanstopbybetweenevents, haveaglassofwineandwatchsomeeventsonthebigscreensthere."
Thedowntownsitewillhaveacapacityof 3,000 peopleandincludesomepavilionsfeaturingCanadiannaturalbeautyandart.
LiveCityYaletown, anotherlivesite, willaccommodate 10,000 peopleandbeano-alcoholzone. Itwillstageactivitiesorganizedbysponsorsandavarietyofliveconcerts.
"TheYaletownsitewillbemoreofacelebrationsitewithbigfestivitiesandlotsoflivemusic," themayorsaid.
Earlyplanscalledforbothsitestobe "family-friendly" andalcohol-free.
TheVancouverWinterOlympicswillbeheldonFeb. 12 nextyearandtheYaletownisreportedtohosttheOlympictorchrelayonFeb. 11, thenightbeforetheopeningceremony.
